Killelehy Fort

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Killelehy Fort is a faded earthen ring in a Galway wood, its shallow ditch and low bank barely visible beneath thick growth. Men quarried stone from its south edge, breaking the circle and exposing the hollow inside. What remains is a wound in the ground rather than a wall, a place where human making has been half-erased and the forest has taken back most of the shape.
In a wooded area, formerly part of Eyrecourt Demesne. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (c. 27m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) defined by an inner scarp, intervening fosse and outer bank. The scarp is visible from SW through N to SE; the fosse and outer bank are only evident from SW to W. The monument is densely overgrown and has been quarried out from SE to SW.
