What is recorded here
Killeen Burial Ground on the east slopes of Knocknagullion marked the resting places of children until the mid-nineteenth century. Small uninscribed slabs still stand across its south half, leaning slightly within an oval hollow that overlooks the Blackwater river valley. Good Friday rounds once brought people back to this quiet field, suggesting the dead were remembered as much as buried.
Killeen Burial Ground: This site consists of an oval-shaped hollow which is partially bounded by a poorly preserved bank. Located on the E slopes of Knocknagullion, overlooking the Blackwater river valley from E to S, it is situated in a reclaimed field and some debris has been deposited in its NE sector. The overgrown bank, composed of earth and a considerable quantity of stone, varies from .4m to 1.4m in external height. It is 1.3m wide and is extant only along the S half of the site. The overall dimensions of the site are 20m N-S x 13.5m E-W and the area of burial appears to be largely confined to its S half. Here, uninscribed upright slabs, mostly aligned N-S occur; they average .25m high and .45m wide. The site was no longer in use as a burial place by the mid-nineteenth century (OSNB Kilcrohane, 31). Rounds were formerly made here on Good Fridays (O Ciobhain 1984b, 81).
