Kildoon Burial Ground (Disused)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Kildoon Burial Ground is a disused hilltop site in County Carlow where a circular stone wall still surrounds a place once used for death. Its shape and location suggest it began as a ringfort before becoming a religious burial ground, yet no grave markers remain visible. The absence of names and stones does not erase the purpose; it invites imagination about the people who laid others to rest beneath an open sky.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular shape, name and hilltop location suggest possible ringfort adapted for religious purposes. No visible trace of grave markers. Stone wall surrounds site.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
