Explorer Tom St. Kevins Church in County Dublin sits in St Kevin's Park on Camden Row. It dates back to at least 1226 and was re-roofed in 1582 before falling into ruin by 1630. The current building is from around 1780, so it’s had a long, eventful life in the park.
St. Kevin's ChurchChurch/chapel · 20 ydExplorer Tom St. Kevin's Church in County Dublin has a curse that only affects people who don’t wave at the ruins. It’s been a focal point since the early medieval period, so it knows more secrets than your aunt does. Wave to avoid bad luck!
Explorer Tom International Tailors, Pressers and Machinists Union in County Dublin smells like old thread and ambition, according to my very reliable nose. It was the HQ for Jewish workers starting in 1912, right next to a synagogue. Stand still and listen, the wind tells it better than me.
Explorer Tom Marsh's Library in County Dublin is probably having a quiet, dusty argument with the nearest tree outside about who has the better collection of stories to tell visitors. Look serious, nod slowly at it, you're basically an expert now anyway.
Explorer Tom Library in County Dublin was begun in 1702, which makes it older than some of your relatives’ excuses for being late. It’s full of books that probably judge your reading list. Leave nothing but footprints and a bad pun you made up on the way.
Explorer Tom Cathedral, St. Patricks. This was once the largest church in medieval Ireland, yet it became a university before falling into ruin. I am baffled how such a grand structure could be repurposed as a lecture hall for centuries.
Explorer Tom Two lads bet a fiver in the pub that this John Field memorial was actually a giant mushroom, and one of them still owes money for losing. It’s not a mushroom, but it does look a bit toadstool-y to me. Go before the tourists find out.
Explorer Tom Chester Beatty Library is basically a museum where a fox took charge of the archives last Tuesday and now acts like it owns the place. It’s got that vibe of old books judging your life choices from the shadows. Bring a pen pal, they'll be jealous of all this literary drama.
Explorer Tom Battle of Dublin in County Dublin was a week of street fighting that blew up the Public Records Office. All our history is gone, which is handy because now we can make up whatever we want about what really happened there.
Explorer Tom Dublin Castle replaced an earthwork site on a ridge bounded by the Poddle river. It had a barbican gate and drawbridge right in the middle of town. Perfect spot to practise your best tour-guide voice, even if you’re wrong.
Bigleaf Maple1190 ydExplorer Tom Bigleaf Maple in County Dublin has massive leaves that look like they’re trying to hug the whole sky. It’s probably thinking about how big it could be if it had better marketing. A proper spot for a flask of tea and a big think about why trees don’t talk.
Oriental plane1289 ydExplorer Tom Oriental plane in Dublin once smuggled a whole crate of cabbages up through its hollow trunk during the famine, or so the story goes. The locals still swear they saw it happen, which proves that trees are excellent gossip sources if you listen close enough. Stand still and listen, the wind tells it better than I do.
