This commemorative plaque records: To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the first swim of the Bristol Channel from Penarth to Westin-super-Mare on 5th September 1927 in a time of 7 hours 20 minutes by Miss Kathleen Thomas age 21 years of Penarth Recorded plaque organisation: Weston Town Council.
Kathleen Thomas was a pioneering female swimmer who, at the age of 21, became the first person to swim across the Bristol Channel from Penarth to Weston-super-Mare in 7 hours and 20 minutes on September 5, 1927. Her feat highlighted women's capabilities in endurance sports during an era when such achievements were rare for female athletes.
