Kate Belinda Finn was born in County Cork, Ireland, on 16 December 1864, the only daughter of Eugene Finn and Belinda McCarthy. She learned chess from her mother, who often accompanied her to tournaments, before becoming the first British Women's Chess Champion in 1904. Finn defended that title in 1905 and remained a prominent figure in the game until her death in London in 1932.
