This black commemorative plaque records: Sylvan House c.1740 Joseph Black MD (1728-1799) discoverer of carbon dioxide and latent heat lived here.
Joseph Black was a Scottish chemist and physicist who made significant contributions to the field of thermodynamics by discovering the concepts of latent heat and specific heat. He is also credited with the discovery of carbon dioxide, which he called "fixed air."
