John O'Mahony was born in Loughananna, County Limerick, Ireland in 1815. He became the founding member of the Fenian Brotherhood in the United States and fought in the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848 and the American Civil War. He gave up his family inheritance to fund Irish independence, ending his life in poverty rather than wealth.
