This green commemorative plaque records: The Rev. John Newton 1725-1807 slave-trade abolitionist (once a slave-trader himself), lived at Marchfoot House in Aveley parish as a youth and began his sea career here at Long Reach. His hymn still touches hearts worldwide: 'Amazing Grace... that saved a wretch like me'. Recorded plaque organisation: Thurrock Local History Museum.
Rev John Newton was a key figure in the British abolitionist movement and author of the famous hymn "Amazing Grace," reflecting his transformation from a former slave trader to a prominent advocate for the abolition of slavery.
