This blue commemorative plaque records: The Rt. Hon. John Frederick Cheetham (1835-1916) Born in Stalybridge MP for Stalybridge from 1905 to 1910 In 1897 Mr Cheetham presented to the town the public library now known as The Astley Cheetham Public Library and Arts Gallery. In recognition of this, he was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Stalybridge. His generosity continued after his death with the bequest of his home Eastwood House and his art collection, now known as The Astley Cheetham Collection. Sadly the house was demolished but the grounds remain as Cheetham Park. Recorded plaque organisation: Tameside Metropolitan Borough.
John Frederick Cheetham was a British politician and philanthropist who served as MP for Stalybridge from 1905 to 1910; he is remembered for his significant contributions to the town's cultural institutions, including the establishment of the Astley Cheetham Public Library and Arts Gallery and the donation of his art collection.
