Campbell was born in Lisburn on 27 May 1862, the son of a local doctor, before leaving Ireland for Oxford where he spent his adult life teaching and writing. He remains famous for the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff theorem, a formula that still shapes modern mathematics, yet his own memories probably returned often to the small northern town that gave him his name and his beginning.
