John Cyril Porte

John Cyril Porte emerged from Bandon, County Cork, in 1884 to reshape maritime warfare through flying boats. He joined the Royal Navy young, mastered submarines, then redirected that ocean knowledge toward aircraft capable of surviving crashes on water. His Felixstowe designs gave Britain reliable patrol and rescue platforms during the First World War, while his transatlantic ambition stretched human endurance across the Atlantic. Porte died in 1919 at thirty-five, leaving machines that turned dangerous seas into navigable distance.
