Isabella knew the castle before John could climb its stairs. They stood beside the North Sea at Dunnottar, where the brig carried people past stone walls that had watched Scotland for centuries. John touched the rope and smiled, but Isabella touched the water first, because the sea had drowned more proud men than the castle had ever stopped.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records John and Isabella: Dunnottar Castle, North Sea as Brig (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Dunnottar Castle, located on the North Sea coast of Scotland, was significantly fortified by the Comyn family in the 13th and 14th centuries and later held by the Keiths. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with Scottish resistance to English rule and as the site where the Honours of Scotland were hidden during the 17th century.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
