This blue commemorative plaque records: John Alder ‘The fortunate cooper’ of the Mitre Inn lived here when he won the lottery in 1767. He gave much of his fortune to the town. Recorded plaque organisation: Oxfordshire Blue Plaques Board, Oxford Civic Society.
John Alder, known as 'The fortunate cooper,' became wealthy after winning a lottery in 1767 and generously contributed his fortune to the town.
