This blue commemorative plaque records: Joan Wast 1532-1555. A blind young woman of strong religious convictions Derby's only Protestant Martyr. Died by fire in Windmill Pit on this site 1st August 1555 Recorded plaque organisation: Derby Civic Society, Derby City Council.
Joan Wast, a blind and devout Protestant, was martyred during the reign of Queen Mary I for refusing to renounce her faith, becoming Derby's sole Protestant martyr.
