Inchbonny Bridge carries Newcastle Road across the river beside Jedburgh, a twentieth-century span built for the endless churn of wheels rather than the slow walk of feet. It is the kind of bridge that asks nothing of the person crossing, yet gives up none of its own history. Under its deck the water still moves with the old border country, carrying away every shadow the road drops into it.
