Jamie O'Neill was born in Dún Laoghaire on 1 January 1962, the youngest of four children in a home without books. He ran away at seventeen to escape a difficult father, eventually becoming the novelist who wrote At Swim, Two Boys. The sea town gave him up before he gave it back a voice.
