James Henry Reynolds was born in Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, in 1844 and later earned the Victoria Cross for tending wounded men and carrying ammunition through enemy fire at Rorke's Drift. His fox terrier Dick stayed at his side while spears and bullets fell, leaving once only to bite a Zulu who came too close. The hospital chamber became a place where courage showed itself in steady hands, breath-controlled movement and refusal to abandon another person.
