James Duggan was born in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland, on May 22, 1825, the son of a clothier. He left that world behind in 1842 to study for the priesthood in Missouri, eventually rising to become Bishop of Chicago. His life ended in a Missouri sanatorium in 1899, a distant and bitter contrast to the ambitious journey that began in a small Irish town.
