Captain James Cook FRS RN was a British explorer, navigator, and cartographer renowned for his three pioneering voyages across the Pacific Ocean in the 1760s and 1770s. He is historically important for his detailed charts of Newfoundland, his exploration of the South Pacific including the first European contact with Hawaii, and his circumnavigation and mapping of Australia and New Zealand.
