James Barry

James Barry was born in 1795 in County Cork, Ireland, and became a leading doctor who raised medical standards inside and outside the army. He lived and identified as a man, trained at Edinburgh University, and served as Inspector General of Hospitals until his death in 1865. His story matters because it shows how one person can change care for others while living under the rules of a time that did not yet have words for his truth.
