James Alipius Goold was born in County Cork, Ireland, on 4 November 1812, the start of a life that would build Catholic Melbourne from nothing. He left Ireland young, answered a stranger's appeal in Rome, and carried faith into a new continent where churches had no names and roads had no edges. Cork gave him life; distance gave that life reach.
