Cladh Eilister is associated with St. Elistair, a 6th-century Irish monk and missionary who is said to have founded a monastery on Islay. The site is linked to local traditions of healing and pilgrimage, with the nearby holy well believed to have curative properties, particularly for skin ailments and livestock health.
