Explorer TomAt Inverness Botanic Gardens on Bught Lane, the Highland air gets a cheeky holiday: one minute you are among outdoor beds, the next a Tropical House seems ready to demand a sunhat. I would declare myself its chief jungle explorer, but the plants have grown around the job. See how many climates fit into one Inverness afternoon.
The gardens opened in 1993 and are run by High Life Highland. Outdoors, borders and varied planting change with the seasons; indoors, the Tropical House and Cactus House offer different ideas of a comfortable day. The site also has a nursery and a community Grow Project supporting adults with additional support needs.
Come through the main entrance from Bught Lane, near Inverness Leisure Centre. The operator suggests allowing an hour to an hour and a half to explore and notes that events may close some areas, so check current information before travelling. Café Botanics gives you a place to pause. If you arrive on foot from the city centre, the operator's route follows the river upstream past Inverness Cathedral and reaches the gardens through the orchard. The river stroll is part of the fun, unless you promised everyone a sprint.
Accessible parking and toilets are provided, and the entrance has a ramp, but paths include bark, grass and gravel with uneven stretches. The Tropical and Cactus houses have split levels reached by steps, so plan around those if needed. Assistance dogs are welcome; other dogs are not permitted. Take your time among the leaves, then let Inverness remind you which climate you actually came dressed for.
