What is recorded here

Two broken stones sit embedded in the Lodge wall east of Bellewstown House, preserving fragments of a 1598 inscription about John Bellew repairing castle steps and a door. Read together with a third stone in Sarsefieldstown, they reveal that Sir John and Margaret Plunket of Sarsefield made the work. The castle itself has mostly vanished, leaving only rubble and a house where pride once stood written in rock.

The remains of Bellewstown castle stand c. 30m E of the present Bellewstown House. On a building to the E of the Bellewstown castle , known as the Lodge, there are two inscribed stones which when combined with a third stone in Sarsefieldstown form a full inscription that commemorates John Bellew repairing the steps and door of Bellewstown castle in 1598 (pers comm.
