Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a hidden fairy fort on a Kerry hillock, mapping a circular rath now erased beneath pasture and forgotten reclamation. It faced the Paps of Dana, waiting for people who no longer remember the briars that once choked its ditch. The land swallowed the circle, but the circle still holds the shape of what was lost.
In pasture, on top of a hillock with views S to The Paps of Dana. This rath is not visible at ground level. It is indicated as a subrectangular enclosure (dims. c. 50m x c. 50m) on the 1894 OS 6-inch map and as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. According to local information, land reclamation was carried out in this area some years ago but prior to that 'there was a circle with a ditch around it, which was always covered in briars.'
