What is recorded here

Indicated was a small earthen fort on a gentle south-facing Galway slope, likely housing a person or family before forgetting began. It may have contained a home, a garden or a worship place, but the earth has taken back that memory. What remains is a absent circle, large enough to have held a life and quiet enough to have erased it.

On a gentle S-facing slope in grassland. Described by Athy (1914, 139) as a small wooded enclosure that may have been a rath or 'merely a plantation protected by a bank'. McCaffrey (1952, 124, no. 28) classified it as an ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 28m) defined by a bank and fosse. The remains of a stone revetment were visible on the inner face of the bank.
