What is recorded here

Indicated is a D-shaped holy well in County Galway, Ireland, enclosed by a concrete wall and marked by a Latin cross on a pillar at the northeast corner. The opening faces southeast, admitting light and rain into the small chamber. People may have knelt at its edge, poured water over wounds, or simply sat beside it when the road emptied. The concrete feels modern, but the shape and cross suggest older devotion repeated until it became visible.
Adjacent to a road in grassland. A D-shaped holy well enclosed by a concrete wall (NW-SE 2.2m, NE-SW 1.8m) opening out to SE. A concrete pillar bearing a Latin cross is on top of the wall at NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
