Indicated is a Beaker period farm on Roughan Hill, Clare, where huge slabs still stand in oval rings beside three neighbour farms, cairns and tombs. People lived there in the Early Bronze Age, dropping animal bones and tools into the soil now pocked with old wall lines. The Burren did not appear fully formed; it was built and rebuilt by hands that are gone.

Situated on Roughan Hill on the E edge of the Burren. Survey and excavation in this area (Jones et al. 2011, 33-58) have revealed a prehistoric landscape comprising farms, cairns and megalithic tombs lying within a contemporary field system (c. 2.5km N-S, c. 1.5km E-W) comprising many sections of prehistoric mound wall (CL016-172----). Four such farms are clustered on Roughan Hill within 200m of each other (see CL016-167003-, CL016-174----, CL016-175----/CL016-176----).This record is for an oval enclosure (dims. c. 80m NE-SW; c. 40m NW-SE) defined by walls of very large slabs set on edge. A smaller enclosure (CL016-173001-) is conjoined at W. Limited excavation in 1995 produced domestic artefact assemblages and radiocarbon dates from animal bone refuse that place the occupation of this farm in the Beaker period and Early Bronze Age (ibid., 38-9).
