What is recorded here

Indicated is a coarse, collapsed stone ringfort in County Clare, marked on maps since 1842 and still standing as a rough circular wall amid hazel wood. Westropp dismissed it as badly built in 1911, yet its narrow gateway and interior terrace suggest people lived there deliberately, perhaps hiding from rain or watching the plateau edge. Two other cashels sit nearby, implying a small cluster of households rather than a lonely mistake. The hazel has since swallowed the center, turning human anger or ambition into quiet green darkness.
In hazel wood and pasture at the edge of a plateau sloping gently to the S. Indicated on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Hachured on the 1897 OS 25-inch plan and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Westropp (1911, 361) described this as ‘a very coarse and badly built’ caher and noted a low narrow terrace (H 0.54m; Wth 0.48m) on the inside of the wall. The cashel (diam. c. 30m), roughly circular in plan, is now defined by a much-collapsed stone wall. The outer wall-face (int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.8-2m) survives virtually all the way around. It rises above the stone spread (Wth 2-4m; int. H 0.5-0.8m) immediately inside it. This spread probably incorporates the terrace noted by Westropp. A ‘defaced gateway’ also recorded by Westropp (ibid.) was not visible; its small lintel (L 1.22m; Wth 0.46m; H 0.2m) suggested that it was a narrow entranceway. The interior is completely overgrown with hazel. Two other cashels (CL009-114---- and CL009-116----) lie c. 95m to the SW and c. 105m to the N respectively.
