What is recorded here
Indicated is a vanished circular enclosure in County Mayo, Ireland, where a curving earth-and-stone fence still marks part of its boundary beneath rush-grown pasture. The 1838 OS 6-inch map captured its full form before later surveys erased it, suggesting human hands or farming gradually levelled what people once shaped. It may have been a dwelling, marker, ritual site or boundary monument, yet even its loss has become a shape because one arc resisted forgetting.
Located in rough, rush-grown pasture, in the NW corner of a modern rectilinear field.
A circular embanked enclosure (diam. 20-25m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, clipped at W by a N−S field boundary and incorporated into an E−W townland boundary on its N arc; it is not shown on later map editions.
The enclosure had been levelled. A curving section of field fence (L c. 16m; Wth 2.5-3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.8m), outside which is a shallow fosse-like depression (Wth 2m; D 0.4m), may preserve the SSW–NNW arc of a circular enclosure. The fence is engulfed in overgrowth and difficult to examine, but it appears to be constructed of earth and stone. A very shallow curve is also evident in the intersecting E−W field boundary/townland boundary at N.
