What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished rath in Laharan townland, County Kerry, recorded on 1846 and 1895 maps but no longer visible at ground level. The 1846 map showed a circular enclosure about twenty metres across, while the 1895 map reduced it to a small irregular shape, as if the fort itself had begun to forget its own boundaries. Cattle may have grazed the last of its banks into pasture, or people may have simply stopped needing the shape it once held. Either way, the land kept the name and released the wall, leaving behind a fort that exists only through indication rather than sight.

It is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) and on the 1895 OS 6-inch map as a small irregular enclosure (c. 10m x c. 10m). This is probably 'Lissnamucka' fort, which was recorded in the centre of Laharan townland in the 1840s (OSNB, Kilbonane, no. 1, 43).
