What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished fairy fort in County Cork, Ireland, where humans may have built or lost a round home before the land took it back. Its earth and stone were taken to make other walls, leaving only memory and a hidden passage behind. The forgoers did not record a new fact; they refused to leave the old woman without a home.

In pasture, on W-facing slope. Depicted as circular enclosure (diam. c. 22m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, with interior shown as scrub land. Levelled; no visible surface trace. May be single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 27m) called 'An Cathairin', recorded by Bowman (1934, 548) on E. O'Connell's land, with possible Man-made underground passage (CO041-185---) in interior. Bank of earth and stone was 'practically levelled to provide building stones' (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
