What is recorded here
Indicated is a D-shaped fairy fort in County Kerry where a straight field boundary joins a partially overgrown earthen bank, forming an enclosure still named the fort field. Briars, gorse and dumped scrub now block the interior, yet the place remains marked by a children’s burial ground and a local story of a church. The fort does not need to be cleared to be known; it waits beneath its own green anger, holding what the field has stopped naming.
In pasture, on an E-facing slope. A roughly D-shaped area (dims. 22m WSW-ENE) with a straight NNW-SSE side (L c. 22m), formed by an overgrown earthen field boundary, is enclosed elsewhere by a partially overgrown earthen bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.1m). The ground outside this bank and the external face of the bank shows signs of disturbance. Cut scrub is dumped in the interior and along with a heavy cover of briars, gorse and bushes they make it impossible to examine the interior. According to local information, this rath is known locally as the 'fort' and the field is still called the 'fort field'. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) is indicated here on the 1846 OS 6-inch map on the E side of the field boundary. The interior was used as a children's burial ground (KE058-061001-) and there is the tradition of a church (KE058-061002-) here also.
