Indicated

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a subcircular cashel in low-lying Galway scrub, its drystone wall nearly swallowed by grass and a newer field wall. A rectangular shelter clings to the inner north-west face while a faint eastern circle hints at a hut, suggesting people once lived beside animals in this damp, quiet basin. The fort has no grand legend, only the patience of stone and the certainty that ordinary hands built it for storm, birth or death.
In low-lying scrub and grassland. Subcircular cashel (NE-SW 23.3m) defined by a low grassed-over drystone wall, overlain by a field wall from N to NE. A rectangular structure abutting the inner face of the wall at NW may be an animal shelter, whilst a semicircular foundation line (D 1.9m) at E may be a hut site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
