What is recorded here

Indicated is a large square graveyard buried in moving Galway sand dunes, where earlier graves may still sleep beneath the modern stones. The hillock itself grew around the church like a living thing, pulling dead and dirt upward through centuries of wind. Mason recorded an ancient graveyard uncovered nearby in 1931, suggesting the dunes are not empty but layered with forgotten death. Every storm strips the place clean again, forcing the living to remember what the sand keeps trying to erase.

In sand dunes on a hillock that has developed around the church (GA120-007001-), this large roughly square graveyard (c. 98m NE-SW; c. 96m NW-SE) is enclosed by stone wall and field fence. The church is surrounded by modern graves but it is possible that earlier graves lie buried in the sand beneath the modern ones. Mason (1938, 200) refers to an 'ancient' graveyard (see GA120-007005-) that was uncovered 'quite close to the modern graveyard' in 1931.
