What is recorded here

In undulating farmland, 300m WSW of Hampstead House. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular tree-filled enclosure (D c. 40m) and on 3rd ed. (1933) as a U-shaped formation of deciduous trees. What survives is a large striking steep-sided mound (H c. 3m), composed of grassed-over limestone blocks and rubble, which appears to have been quarried into at W. Traces of a surrounding bank are visible from W to N. Possibly a landscape feature but its morphology is also similar to that of a barrow. II - North Galway'.

Enclosure in HampsteadEnclosure · 255 yd

Explorer Tom Enclosure in Hampstead is pretending to be fancy because of its house connection. I bet the most dramatic thing there was a cow refusing a fence line. Pick a stone, any stone, and invent its biography.

Hampstead HouseHouse · 303 yd

Explorer Tom Hampstead House in Galway is a ruin with a bow-fronted face, looking very dignified despite the mess. The dog living there has appointed himself the new owner of the estate. Spot the oldest stone and

Hampstead HouseCountry house · 304 yd

Explorer Tom Hampstead House has a ridiculous smuggling story about cheese being hidden in the walls by a nervous farmer. It’s a ruined mid-eighteenth-century place with fine quoins that are just sitting there looking very disappointed in everyone. Go now, before it gets famous.

Explorer Tom Clonbrock Castle is well-preserved, partially restored, and sits in flat woodland by the river. Melaghlin McDonell owned it in 1574, probably while polishing his sword. Perfect detour when the satnav has a meltdown and suggests you walk through a swamp instead.

Kilconnell AbbeyVisitor attraction · 6.3 miTower (in Ruins)Castle, tower house · 8.1 mi

Explorer Tom Tower in Castle Ffrench is standing there with its coat of arms, built in 1683 to show off a bit. It’s basically a brick letter that never got sent. Bring a pen pal, they'll be jealous of how well it's holding up over the years.

Explorer Tom Kellys Monument is a round tower that thinks it’s the center of the universe. Ten minutes here and you'll have a yarn for the pub about how ancient and important it is.
