What is recorded here

Indicated occupies a high Clare terrace where a faded oval bank faces the Caher valley and Galway Bay. Children were buried inside its SE sector, while a later field wall climbed part of its edge. The place may have begun as a sacred enclosure before becoming an ordinary killeen, but its main identity is the young dead it still contains.

On a level terrace of rough grazing (500’ OD) near the foot of Gleninagh Mountain with panoramic views over the Caher valley to E and through the Khyber Pass to Galway Bay at NW. A small poorly preserved oval enclosure (int. dims. 35m E–W; 29.6m N–S) defined by a low overgrown stony spread (Wth 2.1–2.3m; H 0.3–0.5m), enhanced by a scarp (H 0.5m; Wth 0.9m) along its S side. A children’s burial ground (CL002-025001-) lies in its SE sector and a later field wall runs on top of its bank from S clockwise to NNW. Swan (1991, 108) recorded a bullaun and destroyed structure at this location, and suggested it was an early ecclesiastical site ‘degenerated…to the status of a killeen’.
