What is recorded here
The fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Falnasoogaun OR Ropefield is in County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies a low rise in undulating pasture and contains a roughly circular area enclosed by earthen banks and a dry fosse. A causewayed entrance appears at the east, while a possible underground passage remains in the west interior. O'Rorke wrote that Mass was said near the rath and a hedge-school taught in its ditch, though three other raths exist in the townland.
In undulating pasture, on top of a low rise. A roughly circular area (33m N-S; 30.5m E-W) enclosed by a flat-topped earthen inner bank (Wth 6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 3m), with a dry flat-bottomed intervening fosse (Wth 10.3m) and a flat-topped earthen outer bank (Wth 5.6m int. H 2.2m). There is a causewayed entrance at E, revetted by large stones on the N side where it cuts through the inner bank. The land to N and S of the rath has been quarried. A field boundary respects the rath to E and SE. There is a possible Man-made underground passage (SL032-064002-) in the W portion of the interior. According to O'Rorke (1878, 305), Mass was said 'on or near the rath of Fal-na-sugan' and 'a hedge-school' was taught on weekdays in the ditch of the rath. There are three other raths (SL032-037----; SL032-038----, SL032-039001-) in this townland and it is not known which was being referred to by O'Rorke.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
