Indicated, Eglish is a ruined tower house and bawn on a natural rise above the river floodplain in County Offaly. Its north and west walls still stand beside an eighteenth-century house, while the courtyard wall and attached outhouses preserve the shape of a working defensive estate. A medieval church lies nearby, linking the site to centuries of continuous settlement on that small commanding rise.
Situated on a natural rise on the floodplains of the river located to the S of the site and site of medieval church (OF030-016----) to SE. Poorly preserved tower house (OF030-015----) constructed with roughly coursed limestone rubble with only portions of its N and W walls remaining with a later 18th century house attached to its N wall. Running S from the SW angle of the tower house and returning E the bawn wall is largely intact with several outhouses attached to the bawn. Evidence of cobblestone paving in the SW corner of the courtyard. The arrangement of medieval church (OF030-016----) and tower house with later 18th-century house displays an interesting continuity in settlement and architecture similar to Garrycastle (OF029-006001-). Eglish Castle is believed to have been built in the late medieval period, likely by a local Gaelic lord or Anglo-Norman settler, as part of the defensive and territorial networks in the region. Its location near a medieval church and on a strategic natural rise highlights its importance in controlling local trade and communication routes.
