What is recorded here
Indicated is a subcircular cashel in County Clare, Ireland, where double-faced stone walls still stand one to two metres high around a narrow entrance. It sits low on a slight slope beside other ancient enclosures, suggesting a busy neighbourhood rather than a lonely ruin. The stones may have guarded homes, herds or memory itself, while people came and went until the wall became a marker for everyone else.
In a low-lying position on a slight S-facing slope, in pasture within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-030001-). Marked on the OS 25-inch plan (1897) and the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (int. dims. 32.8m N–S; 32m E–W) is defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1–1.5m; H 1.2–1.6m). The outer wall-face at E has larger stones laid horizontally at the base, with smaller stones above it. The entrance (Wth 0.6m) is at NNW, and its E side has been re-built. Double-faced stone walls abut the exterior of the cashel at N and SW, defining a field (c. 45m N–S; c. 45m E–W) which was likely associated with the cashel.
Another cashel (CL009-040003-) lies c. 50m to the SSE with an enclosure (CL009-040004-) attached to it at E. A rectangular enclosure (CL009-040002-) lies c. 14m to the E and a house (CL009-040005-) lies c. 40m to the SE. A cairn (CL009-170----) lies c. 72m to N.
