Indicated is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. It is an artificial island, usually built in shallow lake water, where people lived, kept animals or marked a boundary. The name gives no further detail, but the form is clear: a small made land surrounded by wet darkness. Such places required courage, because every entrance and exit depended on water, weather and memory.
