What is recorded here
Indicated is a circular cashel on a Clarence ridge where two townlands meet, its stone bank still standing after centuries of pasture and rain. The entrance faces south past a fallen flag, while two cairns block the view behind it as if marking a boundary nobody living can fully explain. People may have gathered there to watch weather, settle disputes, or simply belong to a place old enough to stop asking permission.
On a raised area of rough pasture at the boundary between Croagh South and Poulnabrucky townlands, within a multiperiod field system (CL005-115001-) and with views in all directions, except to S and SSE where it is blocked by two cairns (CL005-115011- and CL005-115012-). Indicated on the 1916 ed. of the 6-inch OS maps. A roughly circular cashel (int. dims. 34m E-W; 33m N-S) defined by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 1.4-1.8m) with some outer facing at S (H 0.6-0.8m) and an entrance gap (Wth 1m) at S. A large flag (L 1.8m; H 0.65m; T 0.22m) stands at the S side of the entrance. On inspection in 1998, a possible internal feature against the WNW interior was noted but was too overgrown to clearly identify. The townland boundary wall between Croagh South and Poulnabrucky runs along the NE sector. Three cairns are located in the surrounding area, one 40m to the S (CL005-115011-), one 60m to the SSE (CL005-115012-) and the other (CL005-115016-) 79m to the NW.
