What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished oval enclosure atop a Cork hill, marked only by a ring of deciduous trees and a bank that people levelled for tillage. It appeared on maps from 1842 to 1937, yet the earth that once held its shape has been erased. The trees may still trace the boundary, keeping the outline alive while the field swallows the rest.

In tillage, atop hill, c. 300m NW of Cregane House. Depicted as hachured oval enclosure (c. 45m N-S; c. 35m E-W) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; indicated as oval enclosure on 1905 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps; partially planted with trees on all three editions of OS 6-inch map. Oval area (38.2m N-S; 29.4m E-W) planted with deciduous trees. According to local information, bank which once enclosed site, levelled. No visible surface trace of bank or any enclosing element. May be tree ring. Ringfort (12370) in adjoining field c. 100m to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
