What is recorded here
Indicated is a subcircular cashel in County Clare, Ireland, where a double-faced stone wall still stands one metre high on a slight rise above limestone pavement and hazel scrub. Its western inner face displays large, regularly shaped blocks, while a later field wall leans against the eastern arc and a central wall stretches nine metres across the interior. The site appeared on the first Ordnance Survey map in 1842 and remains a quiet enclosure where human hands shaped stone before the moss and scrub reclaimed its edges.
On a slight rise offering widest views out W-E, in a clearing in an area of mixed limestone pavement, hazel scrub and rough pasture. Indicated on both the first (1842) and Cassini editions of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This subcircular cashel (37.5m E-W; 36.5m N-S) is defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1.4m; H 1m) which survives best at W where its inner face is visible as constructed of fairly large, regularly shaped and undressed blocks. The outer wall-face stands highest (H c. 1m) at ESE, and is built of flat slabs and blocks. Elsewhere, along the S-half of the wall circuit its outer face (av. H 0.3m) survives intermittently while the rest of the perimeter is defined by moss-covered wall collapse (Wth 4-6m; H 0.7-0.8m). There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.1m) at S. A later field wall is built on or near the cashel wall’s outer face along the E arc. The S half of the interior is level but slopes down to NW-NE in the N half. In the centre a WNW-ESE running wall (L c. 9m) appears early and stands to several courses in height. In the SW sector, against the cashel wall, is a raised suboval area (Wth 5m; max. H 1.3m at E) with poorly defined edges.
