What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland, measuring twenty-two metres across and marked by a low sod-covered stone bank. A field wall cuts through its interior while a farm track still skirts the eastern edge, proving the site remained useful long after its original purpose faded. The western slabs and southern gap hint at a forgotten entrance or kerb, preserving a shape that human hands have repeatedly rearranged but never fully erased.

Circular raised area (22.6m N-S; 20.6m E-W) defined at W-SW by a low, sod-covered stone bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.7m), and elsewhere by a dilapidated scarp. The perimeter at W is incorporated into a N-S field wall; the field wall continues beyond the rath to N, but has been removed where it extended to S of the rath. An E-W field wall bisects the interior to the N of centre. Remnants of a farm track, originally flanked by field banks, and indicated on the 1922 OS 6-inch map, skirts the rath at NE-SE, possibly following the curve of a fosse or outer enclosing element. The interior slopes slightly to SE, and there is a gap (Wth 3m) at the SE which may be the original entrance. In the W half of the interior, close to the inner edge of the bank, low slabs in a N-S row protrude from the ground; it is not clear what these represent –possibly a remnant of a kerb. There is oblong depression (10.4m E-W; 3m N-S; D 0.5m) the SW quadrant. There is an enclosure (MA015-078----) 120m to SE. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 November 2018
