What is recorded here
Indicated is a fairy fort in County Mayo, Ireland, where a twenty-five-metre circular bank still holds its shape beside a stream. Hawthorn and blackthorn choke the entrance, hiding a possible causeway beneath old machinery and shadow. The fort watches two other raths nearby, suggesting a forgotten neighbourhood rather than a lonely marker. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped there before the bushes closed the gate.
In pasture, located on a rise in undulating terrain, with good views SE−SW along the course of a stream, which is 130m to S. Ground rises to NNE.
Slightly raised circular area (diam. c. 25m) defined by a bank (Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.2m, at E), outside which it is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 2.2m at E) with an external bank (Wth 3-4m; int. H 1m; ext. H 0.6m, at E). The outer bank has been levelled on the NW arc.
The original entrance may have been at SSE where there is a gap (Wth 3m) in the inner bank, with a corresponding break in the outer bank. There may be a causeway across the fosse here –a slight rise is evident but was obscured at time of visit by a heap of old farm machinery. The rath is densely ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn bushes. There are raths (MA071-037----; MA071-038----) 255m to E and 260m to SE, respectively.
