What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished Mayo rath, reduced to a faint ridge and a surviving fence line after ploughing erased its banks. It still holds the shape of a small oval world, large enough for a household but fragile enough to disappear under boot traffic. The lost third may have contained a door, a hearth or a boundary marker now indistinguishable from ordinary soil. What remains is a reminder that human residence can be both substantial and easily erased.

In improved pasture, located on a low ridge, which provides views of the surrounding gently undulating terrain. This enclosure, which was probably a rath, is indicated on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as an oval embanked enclosure (diam. c. 35m NW–SE; c. 30m NE–SW). On the 1930 edition, a NE–SW field boundary is shown extending across the NW third of the enclosure. The enclosure has been levelled. The NE–SW field boundary is extant. There is no visible trace of the NW third of the enclosure to NW of the fence, apart from a slight rise in ground level immediately adjacent to the fence. To SE of the fence, the outline of a slightly raised semicircular area (22m NW–SE to fence; 31.6m NE–SW) is still evident, representing the SE two thirds of the enclosure.
