What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort or stone ringfort in Carricknagat (leyny By.), County Sligo, Ireland. The circular cashel sits inside a larger oval field, while a D-shaped field and several smaller regular fields extend eastward across the narrow terrace. Some wall stretches have been removed, but low grass-covered stones still mark the boundaries of these ancient pastoral enclosures.

In pasture, on the E edge of a narrow terrace. A circular area (diam. c. 20m) defined by a collapsed stone wall which is evident as a low grass-covered spread of stones (Wth 2.1m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m). At NW an 11m stretch of the wall has been removed. There is a narrow gap (Wth 0.8m) at SSE. The interior is level. The cashel is incorporated into the NE quadrant of a large oval field (int. diam. c. 50m E-W; c. 40m N-S) which is defined by a collapsed stone wall, a 30m stretch of which has been removed at NW, similar to that of the cashel. About 30m to E of the cashel is a D-shaped field (int. dims. c. 60m NNE-SSW), with a straight NW side (L c. 65m), also defined by a collapsed stone wall. Several small more regular fields, indicated on the 1913 OS 6-inch map, further to the E have been levelled.
