What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular stone cashel on a narrow Clare slope, its double-faced wall still standing though much of the inner rubble has been stripped for nearby buildings. The fort measures barely thirty-six metres across, small enough that a handful of people could have filled its entire life. Houses appeared within metres of its edge, suggesting the stones fed domestic walls long before anyone thought to preserve the ring. What remains is a thin skin of the original structure, marking the boundary between a lived place and the material that vanished into other roofs.

On a N-facing slope with limited views. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). Described by Westropp (1905, 209) as ‘much levelled’. An almost circular cashel (est. dims. 36m N-S; 35.6m E-W) defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 1.7-2.5m; int. H 0.3-0.5m; ext. H 1-1.6m) with a rubble core. The core material has been removed from SW to NW and some of it has been placed on top of the wall-faces. A drystone wall has been built along the outer wall-face from N to E. Gaps at E and NW are not original. Apart from dense external scrub between N and E, the wall is clear of overgrowth. The remains of an 18th/19th-century house (CL016-091003-) are visible immediately outside it at SW and the further remains of three similar houses (CL016-091002-, CL016-091004- and CL016-091005-) are located and c. 15m to the W, c. 53m to the WNW and c. 54m to the NW respectively.
